The Albanese Government has officially launched the Maritime Skills and Training Initiative (MSTI), aimed at providing sea time access for up to 20 trainee and cadet seafarers. This new program is backed by a $13.8 million investment over four years, designed to tackle skill shortages and enhance workforce capabilities within the maritime sector. The initiative will offer financial grants to employers, facilitating the onboarding of these trainees.

MSTI is part of a broader strategy stemming from the 2023 Strategic Fleet Taskforce Report, which aims to support the next generation of seafarers by enabling them to complete the necessary sea time for international certification. This initiative underscores the Albanese Government’s commitment to bolstering the maritime sector as a vital contributor to economic growth, safety, and sustainability in shipping.

The funding will cover various costs associated with having trainees or cadets onboard, including wages, accommodation, provisions, and transportation. Eligible roles encompass Integrated Rating trainees and cadets, including Deck, Engine, and Electro-Technical Officers. Additionally, $2.5 million has been allocated to Industry Skills Australia (ISA) to address training barriers within the industry, further supporting the development of a skilled maritime workforce.
