Harwich Haven Authority (HHA) has introduced its first all-female crew, featuring flexible coxswain Lucy McGain and marine apprentice Jorden Gleave. Their role is to facilitate the safe boarding and disembarking of marine pilots at the ports of Felixstowe, Mistley, and Harwich. In celebration of International Day for Women in Maritime on May 18, they aim to inspire more women to pursue careers in this field.
Jorden, who has been an apprentice for over a year, emphasizes the diversity of her job, which includes tasks like operating pilot boats and assisting with large container ships. She highlights the vast opportunities available in the maritime industry, noting that many roles remain unexplored.
Despite the transport sector contributing £214 billion to the UK economy in 2020, only 21% of its workforce is female, according to Maritime UK. However, HHA stands out by employing women at all levels within the organization. CEO Sarah West encourages women to explore the maritime sector, stating that HHA is committed to challenging industry norms and creating opportunities for women.
Lucy, who joined the industry without prior maritime experience, reassures potential candidates that barriers to entry are minimal, reinforcing the message that the maritime industry is open to all.
