By 2035, many daily manual operations at sea may be automated, but a significant portion will still rely on seafarers. A recent survey revealed that despite advancements in technology, most respondents believe that manual tasks will continue to be performed by crew members. Nick Copley, co-CEO of Ocean Technologies Group, emphasizes that while technology will reduce mundane tasks, seafarers will still be essential for safe and responsible shipping.

Experts predict that routine activities like monitoring and maintenance could see up to 40% automation within the next decade. Ajay Chaudhry from Synergy Marine Group notes that while some tasks may shift ashore, critical roles requiring immediate human judgment—such as emergency response—will remain onboard. Manish Singh of Aboutships anticipates that up to half of repetitive tasks may disappear, with many maintenance activities moving to port.

Overall, improved connectivity and AI tools are expected to streamline operations, reducing manual reporting and documentation. However, the need for skilled professionals in areas like safety, compliance, and repairs will persist, ensuring that human expertise remains vital in maritime operations.
