Danica Crewing Specialists has reached a significant milestone in advancing the next generation of seafarers, as the first cohort of 10 cadets from Bandari Maritime Academy (BMA) embarks on their sea-time training program. This initiative includes two six-month onboard placements and marks the first instance this year that BMA has successfully placed a larger group of cadets simultaneously. The flag-off ceremony was attended by key figures including Danica’s Founder and CEO Henrik Jensen and BMA CEO Dr. Eric Katana, highlighting the partnership’s importance in nurturing maritime talent in East Africa.
Kenya is emerging as a promising source of skilled maritime professionals, boasting a well-established maritime education system compliant with the STCW Convention. Despite only around 11,000 licensed seafarers, the country’s cadets demonstrate strong professional knowledge and proficiency in English, making them well-suited for global shipping careers. Currently, BMA has 250 deck and 270 engine students, with many unable to obtain officer licenses due to a lack of sea service.
Henrik Jensen emphasized that this partnership addresses the challenge BMA has faced in securing cadet berths, providing cadets with essential real-world experience in ship operations and safety standards. The program aligns with Kenya’s national Blue Kenya strategy and the EU-supported Go Blue project, promoting sustainable economic growth and job creation in the maritime sector. As global demand for seafarers rises, Danica’s investment in Kenya strengthens its talent pipeline, complementing its expansion into Turkey.
With visa-free travel to numerous countries and favorable operational conditions, Kenyan seafarers represent an efficient workforce for global shipping companies. Danica continues to collaborate with BMA and international training institutions to ensure that cadets are well-prepared to meet global maritime standards. Dr. Eric Katana expressed gratitude for this partnership, emphasizing its role in securing the future of young maritime professionals through vital onboard experience.
