MODEC Production Services Ghana JV Ltd has officially donated a fully operational workboat, Handler 2, to the Regional Maritime University (RMU) in Accra. This initiative, supported by MV25 Charter Fund Partners, aims to enhance maritime training in Ghana. The vessel, referred to as a “floating classroom,” will be transferred to the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GHAPOHA) for practical training in maritime operations.
During the handover ceremony, RMU’s Acting Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Jethro W. Brooks Jr., expressed gratitude for MODEC’s ongoing support, highlighting the partnership’s alignment with the values of excellence and innovation. He emphasized that Handler 2 will be crucial for developing students’ seamanship skills, including mooring, anchoring, and navigation, in accordance with the International Maritime Organization’s training standards.
MODEC’s Managing Director, Mr. Theophilus Ahwireng, noted that the donation represents a long-term investment in maritime education and capabilities in Ghana and West Africa. He revealed that MODEC has invested over $2.3 million in RMU projects, including a $1.8 million Welding Training Centre developed in collaboration with Tullow Oil. Ahwireng urged users of the workboat to be responsible stewards of this valuable resource.
