Hong Kong’s Mariners Club, operated by the Sailors Home and Mission to Seafarers, is optimistic about the reopening of its renovated nine-storey guest house next Tuesday. This facility aims to attract maritime industry members back for crew changes. The club is now situated in a 43-floor building in Tsim Sha Tsui, with the upper floors being developed into a hotel managed by Kimpton.
The Mariners Club features various amenities, including a church, swimming pool, dining options, a gym, and 75 guest rooms, designed to support the needs of seafarers. However, the redevelopment faced significant challenges, notably a devastating fire in 2023 that lasted nine hours and triggered a No 4 alarm, visible across Victoria Harbour.
The reopening aligns with Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu’s recent policy address, which emphasized maritime development and proposed enhanced promotional strategies for both local and mainland markets. Despite a decline in local seafarers to just 515 as of December 31, the club remains hopeful about revitalizing Hong Kong’s status as a hub for crew changes. Reverend Canon Stephen Miller expressed the club’s commitment to providing top-notch facilities to attract maritime professionals back to the city.
