The International Labour Organization (ILO) is discussing potential changes to the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), and Stella Maris UK, a leading maritime charity, is urging for urgent protections for seafarers. CEO Tim Hill emphasizes that seafarers should not have to choose between shore leave and adequate rest, as many are currently facing this unacceptable dilemma. A recent report by the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) supports the charity’s concerns, highlighting the increasing difficulty for seafarers to access shore leave due to relentless working hours.
Instances of seafarers being denied shore leave or being too exhausted to go ashore are becoming more common, with some crew members being forced to sacrifice their rest and well-being for work obligations. This has led to cases of severe fatigue, deteriorating mental health, and even seafarers considering breaking their contracts just to return home. Stella Maris UK is calling for stronger safeguards and consistent enforcement to ensure that seafarers are not put in compromising situations where they have to choose between rest and their right to shore leave.
While acknowledging that some ship operators prioritize crew welfare, CEO Tim Hill stresses the importance of adequate rest and access to shore leave as essential operational requirements, not optional extras. The erosion of shore leave and disregard for meaningful rest are posing significant risks to crew well-being, making it crucial for the ILO to enhance protections and enforcement measures. Stella Maris UK is advocating for these changes to prevent unsafe working conditions from becoming the norm and to prioritize the welfare of seafarers in the maritime industry.
