IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez has outlined the key priorities for the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 2025. These include a focus on seafarers, global security, and decarbonization. Improving the safety and support for seafarers, reducing criminalization, and promoting diversity in the maritime sector are key areas of concern for the IMO.
Dominguez emphasized the importance of addressing gender representation in the maritime industry, noting that there is still progress to be made in this area. He reiterated his commitment to promoting gender diversity and inclusivity in the sector, stating that he will not participate in panels without female representation.
The IMO is also working towards meeting the objectives set out in the 2023 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) strategy, with a goal of decarbonizing the sector by 2050. Sustainability of the oceans is another key focus, with the theme for World Maritime Day 2025 being “Our ocean, Our obligation, Our opportunity.” Dominguez called on Member States and stakeholders to work together to adopt technical and economic measures that will help achieve these goals.
In conclusion, Dominguez expressed optimism for a successful year ahead for the IMO and encouraged others to join him in shaping a positive future for the organization. The focus on seafarers, security, decarbonization, and ocean sustainability will guide the IMO’s efforts in 2025.
