On March 1, 2026, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways in India issued a warning for Indian seafarers and maritime stakeholders to remain alert due to escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The Directorate General of Shipping emphasized the importance of adhering to advisories from the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassy in Tehran, urging seafarers to exercise extreme caution while navigating Iranian waters and nearby regions.

The circular specifically advised Indian seafarers currently in Iran to comply with ongoing advisories, and it recommended that shipping companies refrain from deploying Indian personnel to Iran until further notice. Additionally, all Indian-flagged vessels and foreign vessels with Indian crew members were urged to remain vigilant while operating in the region, given the current security climate.

In response to the situation, a high-level video conference was convened with officials from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Airports Authority of India, and airline operators to discuss passenger safety and operational continuity. Indian airlines have been instructed to monitor airspace advisories and implement timely rerouting of flights as necessary, in line with global safety protocols.

These developments follow recent missile strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran, which have resulted in significant unrest, including reported explosions in Tehran. In the aftermath, Iran has declared a period of public mourning for 40 days.
