The International Bargaining Forum (IBF), which includes the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) and the Joint Negotiating Group (JNG), has reached a pay agreement benefiting hundreds of thousands of seafarers globally. This forum conducts negotiations for the world’s only global collective bargaining agreement, covering over 250,000 seafarers on flag of convenience vessels.
Under the new agreement, seafarers, including officers and ratings, will receive a 3.5% wage increase in 2026, followed by an additional 1.5% in 2027. This decision reflects the commitment of workers’ representatives to accept the employers’ offer, ensuring better compensation for maritime workers.
This agreement complements a recent increase in the global minimum wage for seafarers, established by the International Labour Organization (ILO) through its Joint Maritime Commission (JMC) Subcommittee on Wages. While the JMC advises on international labour standards, including minimum wages, the IBF focuses on collective bargaining between the ITF and the International Maritime Employers’ Council. Notably, IBF agreements can provide compensation that exceeds ILO minimum standards, tailored to the specific companies and vessels involved.
