The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) is set to introduce a digital platform in 2026 to enhance the training and assessment of its cadets, transitioning away from traditional paper-based methods. This innovative platform aims to immerse candidates in real-life scenarios through technology. The rollout will commence in the first half of 2026, coinciding with updates to the MCA’s training syllabus that emphasize digital navigation charts, cybersecurity, and data skills as part of its Cadet Training and Modernisation programme.
The new assessment tool will facilitate various types of responses, including multiple choice and written answers, and will enable the annotation of high-quality 2D and 3D images, including electronic navigation charts. It will also feature automated marking and generate assessments from a dedicated question bank. Ajit Jacob, the MCA’s chief examiner, emphasized that this modernization is crucial for accurately verifying the competencies required for safe vessel operation, thereby boosting confidence in the qualifications issued.
In addition to the digital platform, the MCA has introduced a cloud-based app for cadets, streamlining the process of recording training progress. This app allows trainees to store updates offline, upload multimedia evidence of completed tasks, and receive guidance throughout their training, with assessors able to remotely verify their progress. As an Executive Agency of the Department for Transport, the MCA oversees maritime safety, regulation, and search and rescue operations, ensuring that training providers maintain high standards.
