The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), led by Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, has praised Orion Marine Services Limited and Seatransport Ltd for significantly increasing salaries for their seafarer members. In a statement, MWUN’s media officer, John Kennedy Ikemefuna, highlighted the companies’ adherence to the National Joint Industrial Council (NJIC) work book, emphasizing the importance of worker welfare.
Comrade Bunu commended both companies for prioritizing employee well-being, noting that happy workers lead to greater satisfaction for employers. This commitment to welfare has been a focal point of Bunu’s administration since his recent election as President General of MWUN.
Both companies, located in Apapa, Lagos, exemplify effective management practices, as acknowledged by Bunu when he signed the NJIC agreements. He urged other maritime companies to follow their lead in providing fair salaries, warning that those who fail to comply will be reported to the Nigerian Maritime and Safety Agency (NIMASA). The union’s stance underscores the critical relationship between employee satisfaction and operational success in the maritime sector.
