Cadets from Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and least developed countries (LDCs) are encouraged to apply for the Nextwave Seafarers training program, set to launch in July 2025. Nominations are due by May 31, 2025. This initiative, organized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in collaboration with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, aims to address the global demand for trained seafarers while providing structured career opportunities in the maritime sector.
The program offers cadets enrolled in approved training programs practical experiences that can certify them as officers in various departments, including deck and engine services. Participants will gain up to six months of onboard training on Bahri-operated merchant ships, essential for attaining internationally recognized certification and improving access to maritime placements.
Costs associated with the program, such as placements on ships, monthly scholarships, return flights, and transit allowances, will be fully covered. Each country can nominate up to two candidates, with an emphasis on gender balance. Nominees must be submitted through official maritime administrations by email, including a completed nomination form and supporting documents confirming eligibility.
