Pilbara Ports is enhancing seafarer welfare by launching a Ship WiFi Support Program, effective May 12, 2025. This new initiative will phase out individual SIM card recharges in favor of a ship-wide Mobile WiFi system. Participating vessels will receive free data top-ups upon returning to the Port of Port Hedland, promoting broader internet access for all crew members.
The program aims to improve connectivity for seafarers, allowing them to maintain communication with families and support their mental health and wellbeing. Ships are encouraged to obtain a Ship WiFi Pack, which includes a Mobile WiFi Router and a Mesh WiFi Extender. Data will be remotely topped up by the Port Hedland Seafarers Centre during each port call or anchorage stay.
This initiative underscores Pilbara Ports’ commitment to fostering a supportive maritime community. Recent SEAFiT Crew Surveys by SAFETY4SEA highlight the importance of reliable internet access for seafarers’ wellbeing, indicating that many still face challenges with cost, speed, and reliability of onboard internet services.
