Christiania Gas has confirmed that nine crew members were kidnapped from its LPG tanker, CGAS SATURN, during a pirate attack in the Gulf of Guinea, West Africa. The incident took place early on Wednesday, highlighting the ongoing threats in this dangerous maritime region.
Although four crew members remain safely on board the tanker, one has suffered minor injuries and is receiving medical attention. The CGAS SATURN has since relocated to safer waters following the assault.
In a statement, Christiania Gas expressed its grave concern regarding the situation. The company emphasized that its primary focus is to establish communication with the missing crew to ensure their prompt and safe release. An emergency response team is coordinating with relevant authorities who were alerted immediately after the incident.
The Gulf of Guinea is notorious for piracy, posing significant risks to maritime operations. The International Maritime Bureau reported 15 piracy incidents in the region from January to September 2025, a slight increase compared to the same period in 2024. The safety of crew members remains a pressing issue, with a total of 14 individuals kidnapped in 2025 alone, signaling the ongoing threat of piracy in this region.
