Pilbara Ports is implementing upgrades to its internet service for visiting seafarers, moving away from individual SIM card recharges and introducing a ship-wide mobile WiFi system. This new initiative, set to begin on May 12th, will provide free data top-ups to participating vessels at the Port of Port Hedland. The goal is to improve internet access for all crew members, facilitating better communication with their families and supporting mental health and well-being.
Ships are encouraged to acquire the designated Ship WiFi Pack, which includes a mobile WiFi router and a Mesh WiFi extender. Once installed, data will be remotely topped up by the Port Hedland Seafarers Centre during each port call or anchorage stay. Pilbara Ports aims to promote seafarer welfare and create a more inclusive maritime community through this initiative, emphasizing the importance of connectivity for crew members.
The new system offers several benefits, such as extended data access from anchorage due to the Telstra network reaching the sea, a signal capable of penetrating three decks of the ship, and data monitoring and top-ups by the Seafarers Centre. However, it is noted that mobile reception may be limited at the outer anchorage, requiring the WiFi router to be placed on the land side of the ship. The system is designed for communication with families through VOIP apps, rather than for high-bandwidth activities like video streaming. Upgrades to a more powerful mobile WiFi router are available for ships looking to enhance their connectivity.
