The Mission to Seafarers recently launched OceanCare, a global welfare initiative in partnership with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL), aimed at supporting the wellbeing of seafarers in challenging environments. This unique program offers a confidential listening service led by trained welfare professionals, allowing MOL’s seafarers to discuss work-related stress, health issues, personal relationships, and financial pressures.
OceanCare opens conversations with the question, “What’s on your mind?” Welfare Officers listen to the challenges faced by seafarers and help identify meaningful solutions. This initiative addresses the pressing concerns highlighted by the Seafarer Happiness Index, which points to the mental and physical health challenges exacerbated by reduced crew numbers and evolving training requirements.
Jan Webber, Director of Development at The Mission to Seafarers, expressed excitement about the partnership with MOL, emphasizing the importance of this service for seafarers dealing with various issues, from mental health to workplace conflicts. OceanCare not only provides emotional support but also helps seafarers create self-care plans and coping strategies.
The program aims to empower seafarers, fostering a culture of openness and support within the MOL fleet. By encouraging dialogue and facilitating access to resources, OceanCare seeks to build healthier shipboard communities and enhance individual wellbeing.
