The 2024 Seafarer’s Survey conducted by Dania Crewing Specialists revealed that seafarer pay is on the rise due to a shortage of skilled crew members. Salaries for some positions have increased by up to 10% compared to the previous year. However, the survey also highlighted a growing concern for crew well-being, with mental stress and welfare issues at sea becoming more prevalent. More seafarers are reporting difficulties with mental health, pay problems, and food shortages.
Wages are increasing across all types of vessels, with senior officers in India receiving the highest salaries, about 10% more than their counterparts from Eastern Europe and the Philippines. Filipino junior officers earn less than their peers in these regions. Additionally, senior ratings like Bosuns, Fitters, and Pumpmen are also experiencing pay hikes due to high demand for their roles.
Despite the rise in wages, seafarer welfare remains a major issue. The survey found that mental health issues are becoming more common, with a significant increase in seafarers feeling mentally depressed during their contracts. Other welfare concerns include food and water shortages, delays in salary payments, and a high percentage of seafarers switching jobs for better opportunities. The competition for skilled crew members is intense, leading to continuous wage increases in the industry.
