The Department of Migrant Workers is determined to enforce the Magna Carta for Seafarers in response to recent cases of seafarer abandonment, ensuring that seafarers are protected from unfair practices. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has directed the department to safeguard the welfare of seafarers and uphold the Magna Carta for Seafarers, emphasizing that abandonment violates international regulations and standards.

The Department of Migrant Workers has reported on the status of seafarers from abandoned vessels, including cases involving MV Atheras, Buenaventura, Gemini, Manticor, and Team Porter. These reports highlight efforts by shipowners and licensed manning agencies to address crew welfare and ensure payment of wages. Additionally, statistics show a concerning number of abandoned vessels and Filipino seafarers in recent years, underscoring the importance of monitoring and protecting seafarers’ rights.

The DMW continues to monitor the welfare of Filipino seafarers and urges them to report any instances of abandonment to the One Repatriation Command Center. The department calls on licensed manning agencies and shipowners to promptly report and repatriate abandoned seafarers. Failure to do so will result in the DMW arranging repatriation through the AKSYON Fund, emphasizing the serious consequences of abandoning seafarers in violation of international regulations.
