Three Ilonggo seafarers, recently repatriated after surviving Houthi rebel attacks in the Red Sea, are set to receive support from local and national agencies. Upon their arrival at Iloilo International Airport, they were welcomed by James Mendiola, OWWA’s regional director, and Cynthia Dario from the Iloilo Provincial PESO. The focus will be on addressing their mental health and economic recovery.
Local officials acknowledge the trauma these seafarers faced, opting for a supportive approach while allowing them space to recuperate. Dario mentioned that once the seafarers are ready, they can access an initial financial aid of ₱10,000, with potential livelihood grants of up to ₱100,000 available after further assessment.
Iloilo City PESO manager Gabriel Felix Umadhay confirmed that his office is coordinating with the families to determine the assistance needed, which could range from ₱5,000 to ₱15,000. Counseling remains a priority, and if the seafarers wish to return to work, they can be referred to shipping companies.
Mendiola assured ongoing support from OWWA and the Department of Migrant Workers, emphasizing their commitment to monitoring the seafarers’ needs post-repatriation. The attacks highlight the increasing dangers faced by Filipino seafarers in international waters.
