RMT Urges Legally Enforceable Seafarers’ Charter to Protect UK Ferry Jobs

The RMT seafarers’ union has cited data from the Fishguard–Rosslare ferry route to advocate for a legally enforceable seafarers’ charter, aimed at safeguarding jobs, safety, and service standards in the UK ferry sector. Passenger numbers on the Stena Line-operated Fishguard route increased by nearly 10% in 2024 compared to 2019, contrasting sharply with a 50% decline on Irish Ferries’ Pembroke–Rosslare service, which employs a low-cost crewing model similar to P&O.

This cost-cutting approach not only undermines wages and working conditions but also utilizes fatigue-inducing rosters that jeopardize safety and service quality. The RMT attributes the success of Stena Line to its recognition of the union and adherence to collective bargaining agreements, thereby ensuring fair pay and conditions for its seafarers. This model also benefits local communities by maintaining quality jobs in the Fishguard area.

RMT General Secretary Eddie Dempsey emphasized that the Fishguard figures demonstrate that decent jobs and union recognition lead to improved passenger services. He supports the government’s initiative for a mandatory seafarers’ charter to establish national standards, halt the decline in working conditions, and protect both jobs and passenger services in the ferry industry.
