A new pilot program is set to transform the maritime sector by implementing digital identity systems for seafarers, aiming to replace traditional paper-based verification processes. Launched by SITA in collaboration with Columbia Shipmanagement and IDsure, this initiative is part of the broader SmartSea strategy, which seeks to enhance digital maturity in maritime operations akin to advancements in air travel. The pilot focuses on creating a digital “Seafarer Handbook” that allows crew members to store and verify their identities and professional certifications on mobile devices.

This innovative approach is designed to streamline administrative tasks, significantly reducing the time required for identity checks that typically take hours. Jesper Holmgren, CEO of IDsure, emphasized that this pilot helps maritime authorities and shipping operators transition to a more secure and efficient digital certification process, moving away from fragmented paper systems. The app developed by IDsure utilizes SITA’s identity verification technology to confirm essential documents like passports, ensuring that seafarers maintain control over their personal data while allowing authorities to verify credentials as needed.

Pedro Alves, Senior Vice President at SITA, highlighted that this project represents a significant step toward modernizing identity management across all transport sectors. The pilot initially focuses on bridge officers, with plans to expand to other roles pending its success. Additionally, the Bahamas Maritime Authority has shown interest in adopting similar digital solutions, indicating a growing trend toward digital transformation in maritime operations.
