Seafarers on ferries from Patras and Igoumenitsa are set to strike for 48 hours on June 3-4, citing chronic understaffing that poses safety risks and deteriorates working conditions. The Panhellenic Maritime Federation (PNO) announced the industrial action, highlighting that crew members are overworked and facing burnout due to insufficient staffing.
The PNO criticized the government’s and employers’ failure to resolve these issues, despite previous commitments made following a four-day strike in October 2024. The federation emphasized the need for immediate action to address crew shortages that compromise safety.
Additionally, the PNO raised concerns about the underutilization of Greek seafarers on Italian-flagged vessels, particularly those operated by Grimaldi Lines on Patras–Italy routes. They called for a review to ensure that Greek crew members are employed according to their qualifications and not relegated to lower positions.
This strike reflects ongoing tensions in the maritime sector, as unions demand better working conditions and adherence to staffing commitments from employers and the state.
