The International Maritime Organization (IMO) presented its ongoing initiatives to support and protect seafarers at the 67th Convention of the International Ship Suppliers and Services Association (ISSA 67) held in Singapore from October 15 to 18. Senior Legal Officer Mr. Jan Engel de Boer delivered a keynote address that centered on IMO’s extensive welfare framework designed for seafarers.

During his presentation, Mr. De Boer emphasized the significance of the IMO/ILO joint database on seafarer abandonment, which was established in 2005 with the support of ISSA. This database has recently been upgraded to provide updated information on vessels with seafarers who have been reported abandoned globally.

Mr. De Boer remarked on ISSA’s longstanding commitment to seafarers’ welfare, particularly during the crew change crisis prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic. He noted that the conference served as a valuable platform to enhance collaboration and advance initiatives aimed at improving seafarers’ working conditions and preparedness for future health emergencies.

Additionally, the IMO/ILO welfare system for seafarers encompasses various support mechanisms. ISSA represents nearly 2,000 ship suppliers globally, including 40 national associations and 51 associate members.
