The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) is leading a project to modernize seafarer training in the UK, aiming to establish it as a gold standard for safer and greener shipping globally. UK submissions have been accepted by the Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping (HTW) sub-committee of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for consideration as a major amendment to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW). The proposed revisions were supported by the HTW sub-committee and will now be taken forward by an international working group, ultimately becoming part of the STCW convention and its mandatory code.
The submissions include updates to deliver essential skills for decarbonization and increased digitization at sea, the benefits of bridge simulator training for seafarers and operators, and the development of officer roles in response to technological advancements in navigation, propulsion, and automation. These changes aim to raise standards, improve safety, and enhance environmental protection in the maritime industry worldwide.
