Financial support for seafarer training in the UK has received a significant boost, thanks to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). The Support for Maritime Training (SMarT) program has been extended for another year, with funding now available until March 31, 2027. This initiative utilizes a multi-million-pound budget from the Department for Transport to help cadets, junior officers, and ratings acquire essential skills for successful careers in the maritime sector.
Under the SMarT scheme, sponsoring companies can claim up to 50% of the training costs for eligible trainees. This latest extension builds on a previous 12-month continuation approved last year, underscoring the program’s importance in fostering a skilled workforce. Ajit Jacob, MCA Chief Examiner, emphasized the critical role of training in maintaining a professional maritime industry, stating that the funding reflects a commitment to high-quality training opportunities.
The SMarT funds are particularly aimed at supporting self-funded junior officers in obtaining a Management Level Certificate of Competency, thereby driving recruitment and encouraging more individuals to consider maritime careers. The initiative also seeks to create pathways for new companies to access these valuable training resources. The funding extension was officially announced through Marine Information Note (MIN) 678 Amendment 3.
