The Support for Maritime Training (SMarT) fund, with a multi-million-pound budget, offers crucial assistance to cadets and junior officers in the maritime sector. Sponsoring companies can claim up to 50% of training costs for eligible trainees, facilitating their development and career progression.
Recently, the deadline for funding was extended from September 2024 to March 2025, with additional funding secured to continue through March 2026. This initiative aims to bolster the number of UK seafarers and encourage recruitment by promoting maritime careers among both men and women. It also opens opportunities for new companies to participate in the scheme.
Ajit Jacob, MCA Chief Examiner, emphasized the significance of SMarT funding in enhancing the careers of seafarer cadets and addressing the industry’s skills gap. He expressed hope that the extended support will attract individuals who previously overlooked maritime careers, highlighting the importance of comprehensive training for all.
