Norway has achieved a major milestone in maritime sustainability with the successful production of green hydrogen for ships at NTE’s facility in Rogaland. This marks a significant leap towards zero emissions in the maritime sector and positions Norway at the forefront of sustainable energy innovation. The project is a collaboration with the Danish company Green Hydrogen System and signifies a pivotal moment in the nation’s pursuit of green energy and sustainable maritime practices.

The responsibility of managing the Rogaland facility will be transferred to Dalane Hydrogen AS as the EU-funded ROBINSON project draws to a close in 2024. The new hydrogen production hub in Egersund harbor, a joint effort by Dalane Energi and Hydrogen Solution, has already commenced green hydrogen production for commercial use, positioning Egersund as a key player in the burgeoning shipping industry. However, challenges such as scaling up production and maintaining cost competitiveness lie ahead, but NTE’s commitment to building a larger network of hydrogen plants and involvement in offshore wind projects reflects a steadfast dedication to innovation and sustainability.

In an effort to bolster the nation’s progress towards zero-emission maritime transport, HAV Hydrogen, a subsidiary of HAV Group, has received funding from Innovation Norway to construct and test a full-scale prototype of a hydrogen energy system for ships. This investment reflects Norway’s commitment to reshaping the future of the maritime industry and fostering a greener global energy landscape. The achievement demonstrates Norway’s dedication to innovation, sustainability, and leadership in the global energy transition, serving as an inspiring beacon for nations around the world, illuminating the path towards a greener, more harmonious tomorrow.
