NYK is set to begin full-scale trials of long-term use of biofuels in 2024 as part of its efforts to reduce carbon emissions. The company plans to expand the use of biofuels in partnership with its shipping customers and verify the safety and stable procurement of biofuels over a longer period. The trials will involve using biofuel continuously for three months on multiple vessel types, with plans to gradually extend the use for a longer period for further validation.

The company has conducted short-term biofuel trials on about 10 vessels since fiscal 2019, but the upcoming trials will focus on the impact of extending the length of use of the fuel and issues such as storage. NYK aims to establish a safe navigation system using biofuels and promote biofuel development as part of its goal to cut emissions by 45 percent from 2021 levels by 2030.

Previous trials have shown that biofuel can result in up to a 10 percent reduction in CO2 emissions compared to conventional marine fuel. NYK has also tested higher concentrations of biodiesel and plans to involve an increasing number and type of vessels in the upcoming trials. This marks a significant step forward in the company’s efforts to advance its goals for reducing carbon emissions.
