The Oxford Centre for Maritime Archaeology (OCMA) is marking its 20th anniversary since its establishment in 2003. Founded by Oxford University, the European Institute for Underwater Archaeology (IEASM), and the Hilti Foundation, OCMA was created as a research hub for maritime archaeology. Over the years, it has evolved to include a staff body of doctoral students specializing in water-based archaeological topics and expanded its teaching to include undergraduate and master’s students.

The partnership between OCMA, IEASM, and the Hilti Foundation has resulted in collaborative projects in submerged cities such as Thonis-Heracleion, Canopus, and Alexandria’s eastern harbor. This collaboration has allowed Oxford academics to supervise doctoral students in researching objects from these sites, gaining access to unique collections and experiences. Additionally, OCMA and IEASM work together to promote research through international conferences and outreach events, engaging both specialists and the public.

The Hilti Foundation has been a long-standing supporter of archaeological expeditions, enabling generations of students to be introduced to the discipline. The partnership aims to establish long-term specialist networks and make the discoveries and knowledge accessible to all. More information about OCMA can be found on their website.
