The International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN) has launched a new resource to support crew in finding safe and secure employment in the yachting industry. Developed in collaboration with experts in the field, the document titled “Personal safety precautions for job-seeking yacht crew” aims to empower crew by providing guidance and tools to make informed decisions about their next role. The resource addresses issues such as bullying, harassment, abuse, and discrimination, and provides a list of organizations that offer support to crew. It is available to download for free from the ISWAN website.

The need for this guidance arose from an increase in calls to ISWAN’s helpline from crew who had experienced personal safety issues, including bullying, harassment, and sexual violence, while working onboard yachts. Many crew had obtained their roles through unregulated means, such as social media and crewing websites. The resource is designed for crew of any gender identity, nationality, or level of experience within the industry.

ISWAN’s projects and relationships manager, Georgia Allen, expressed her pride in the publication of this resource, highlighting the collaboration and dedication of industry professionals in addressing these serious issues. She hopes that the guidance will reach as many crew members as possible and contribute to a safer and more inclusive industry.

Overall, the resource aims to provide crew with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate the job-seeking process in the yachting industry safely and make informed decisions about their employment. It addresses personal safety precautions, rights, and support organizations, and is available for free download from the ISWAN website.
