The Department of Foreign Affairs has called for stronger remedial measures to protect Filipino seafarers following a fatal attack by Iran-backed Houthi rebels on a bulk carrier in the Gulf of Aden. The attack resulted in the deaths of two Filipino seafarers, prompting the filing of a House resolution to provide more safeguards for Filipino seafarers in the Red Sea and nearby areas. DFA Undersecretary Eduardo De Vega emphasized the need for measures to save lives and ensure the security of seafarers, while also acknowledging the role of the Department of Migrant Workers and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration in dealing with manning agencies.
House Resolution 1651, filed by Representative Ron Salo, urges shipowners to divert vessels from the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden until the safety of seafarers can be guaranteed in response to the recent missile attack on the M/V True Confidence. The Philippine government, through the DFA, is already working with international partners to protect Filipino seafarers amidst the ongoing attacks by Houthi rebels in the region. The attack on the M/V True Confidence resulted in the deaths of three seafarers, including two Filipinos, and injuries to several others.
De Vega stated that the DFA is actively engaging with international actors to address the safety concerns of Filipino seafarers in the Red Sea, with support from allies and friends. The attack on the M/V True Confidence on 6 March claimed the lives of two Filipino seafarers and caused injuries to several others, highlighting the need for stronger measures to protect the welfare of Filipino seafarers in the region.
