An armed robbery incident against a ship was reported in Asia between October 24th and 30th. The incident took place on October 27th in the Strait of Malacca and Singapore, where five armed perpetrators boarded a bulk carrier. The ship’s master was stabbed in the chest but is in stable condition and received medical treatment upon arrival in Singapore. This incident brings the total number of incidents in the area to 62 since January 2023. The ReCAAP ISC is concerned about the continued occurrence of such incidents and advises ships to remain vigilant while transiting the area.

The threat level of ‘Abduction of crew for ransom in the Sulu-Celebes Seas’ has been downgraded from ‘MODERATE’ to ‘MODERATE LOW’ due to the measures taken by the Philippine Government. The continuous military operations and dismantling of the Abu Sayyaf Group’s support base in the Sulu archipelago have reduced the likelihood of attacks. However, minimal damages are still expected in case of an attack. The ReCAAP ISC has updated its advisory for ships to exercise vigilance and adopt necessary preventive measures while transiting the Sulu-Celebes Seas.

Ship masters and crew are strongly encouraged to report all incidents of piracy and armed robbery to the nearest coastal State RCC and flag State. They should also exercise extra vigilance and refer to the Regional Guide 2 to Counter Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia for appropriate preventive measures.
