The international shipping industry has come together to denounce the recent attacks in the Red Sea, particularly the drone boat strike on the commercial bulker, Tutor, which tragically resulted in the death of a seafarer trapped in the flooded engine room. In a joint statement on Wednesday, 15 global shipping and maritime industry associations expressed their deep sorrow and condemnation for the attack.
The industry emphasized that these assaults go against the fundamental principle of freedom of navigation and expressed their condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased seafarer. They described the attacks on innocent seafarers as “deplorable,” highlighting the essential role these workers play in keeping the world functioning.
The statement also referenced previous fatal attacks on seafarers, including the incidents involving the True Confidence, Galaxy Leader, and MSC Aries. The industry called for an immediate halt to the attacks and urged states with influence in the region to take action to protect seafarers and de-escalate the situation in the Red Sea. The industry’s associations stressed the need for tangible measures to safeguard these vital workers and the maritime industry as a whole.
