A recent report released by Transport Malta’s Marine Safety Investigation Unit sheds light on the tragic death of a crewmember aboard a Maltese-registered bulk carrier in July 2023, along with the hospitalization of three others. The report highlights the impact of climate change on seafarers and the challenges they face due to their demanding work schedules, which do not allow for proper acclimatization. It warns of the urgent need to address working conditions, training, and the potential increase in such incidents as climate change worsens conditions for maritime workers.
The incident took place on July 27, 2023, when the Elpida GR, a bulk carrier berthing at the port of Mesaieed, Qatar, experienced crew members falling ill and collapsing as they were securing mooring lines. Despite efforts to cool and resuscitate the affected crew, one crewmember tragically passed away due to heat stroke, while the others suffered from heat exhaustion. The investigation revealed that the vessel’s air conditioning system was inadequate to combat the extreme temperatures, leading to the crew’s exposure and subsequent health issues.
The report emphasizes the importance of proper training and procedures for dealing with heat-related illnesses on board vessels. With the increasing impact of climate change on maritime operations, there is a growing concern for the safety and well-being of seafarers who are constantly exposed to harsh environmental conditions. Recommendations have been made to enhance training, medical resources, and awareness of heat-related illnesses to prevent similar incidents in the future and ensure the safety of crew members working in challenging environments.
