South Asia Gateway Terminals (SAGT) is a key player in connecting global economies through its operations at the Port of Colombo. As the largest private investment in Sri Lanka and the country’s first public-private partnership container terminal, SAGT is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year by leading the way in decarbonisation and sustainable operations. In alignment with the International Maritime Organization’s 2050 net zero target, SAGT is implementing various strategic initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint, including hybridising its rubber tyred gantry cranes (RTG) and exploring the use of hydrogen fuel cells.
One of the significant achievements of SAGT’s decarbonisation efforts is the reduction of over 3900 tonnes of CO2 emissions through the hybridisation of its RTGs. The company is also evaluating the possibility of introducing hydrogen fuel cells to further reduce emissions. SAGT is exploring the installation of solar panels on its office building to meet a portion of its electricity needs and is upgrading its wastewater treatment plant to reduce freshwater consumption and reuse treated water for various activities. Additionally, SAGT is actively involved in environmental protection initiatives, such as beach cleanups conducted in partnership with the Marine Environment Protection Authority.
As a member of the World Ocean Council and a committed organization to achieving net zero emissions by 2050, SAGT is dedicated to promoting environmentally conscious practices within the maritime industry. By integrating sustainability goals into its operations and working collaboratively with partners, SAGT aims to set new standards for the industry and contribute significantly to the global efforts towards a more sustainable future. Through its innovative initiatives and partnerships, SAGT is driving positive change that will have a lasting impact on the maritime sector and beyond.
