The Maritime Technologies Forum (MTF) has released a detailed report focusing on the safe transportation of electric vehicles (EVs) on Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC) vessels. The report, titled “Safe Carriage of Electric Vehicles,” delves into the characteristics of EV fires and provides a framework for ensuring the safe transport of EVs. It emphasizes the importance of early detection, prevention of fire spread, firefighting, evacuation procedures, training, and drills to enhance safety onboard vessels.
As the number of EVs being transported on ships continues to rise, concerns about onboard EV fires have also increased. Despite the absence of international regulations specifically dedicated to the safe carriage of EVs, some national and regional organizations have issued guidelines. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is currently working on developing mandatory regulations for the transportation of new energy vehicles, including EVs, with a target completion year of 2027. The report aims to address the unique challenges posed by EV fires and improve safety in maritime operations.
The report outlines key measures that can facilitate the safe transport of EVs on PCTC vessels, including early detection of heated EV batteries, prevention of explosions, fire protection and prevention of fire spread, manual firefighting procedures, fixed firefighting systems, safety of crew during firefighting operations, and the importance of training and drills in the Safety Management System (SMS) for PCTCs carrying EVs. By implementing these measures, the industry can better prepare for and respond to EV-related incidents, ensuring the safety of crews, ships, and cargoes.
