Seaspan Shipyards in North Vancouver is expanding its drydock facilities, which will increase the company’s capacity for ship repair projects by about 30% and create approximately 100 new jobs. The expansion is part of Seaspan’s efforts to upgrade and expand its infrastructure to better serve the Pacific Northwest and support the marine industry in the region. The project, which received permit approval from the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority in October, includes extending the water lot, adding new drydocks, and a floating work pontoon. The company expects the project to take about a year to complete, with the new facilities expected to be operational by late 2024.

The expansion will also include a new operations building designed to accommodate up to 300 people over two shifts. Seaspan has committed to implementing several mitigation measures to address local impacts of noise, air emissions, and lighting. The company’s Vancouver Drydock currently employs about 200 people who work on more than 50 vessel projects per year, including tugs, ferries, freighters, coast guard vessels, cruise ships, fishing vessels, and barges. Seaspan Shipyards, a division of Seaspan ULC, is a leader in Canada’s shipbuilding and ship repair industry, with modern facilities and a workforce of 3,600 in North Vancouver and Victoria.
