The ongoing conflict between Israelis and Palestinians is causing concern for the Jewish community in the Maritime provinces of Canada. The president of the Tiferes Israel Synagogue in Moncton, Francis Weil, has reported incidents of anti-Semitic activity, including threats towards children and a suspicious individual being removed by police from the synagogue. Similar concerns have led the Shaar Shalom Synagogue in Halifax to increase security measures, including locking doors and hiring off-duty police officers. The conflict, which began on October 7, has resulted in thousands of deaths on both sides.

Weil is hoping to secure a security guard for an upcoming service and is questioning whether synagogues should be guarded by police or members of the Canadian army. Despite these concerns, there has been no response from the Moncton Mosque or a provincial Palestinian organization regarding potential threats towards Muslims. The community is feeling nervous and is taking steps to ensure the safety of its members, with Weil expressing a desire for increased security measures in light of recent hate-crime incidents in Montreal and Toronto.
