Seaspan Shipyards recently launched the Canadian Coast Guard’s flagship science vessel, CCGS Naalak Nappaaluk, marking a significant milestone in ocean research. The Offshore Oceanographic Science Vessel (OOSV) is the fourth ship built by Seaspan under the National Shipbuilding Strategy and will serve as a floating laboratory for Fisheries and Oceans Canada. As a Polar Class 6 vessel, it is equipped with advanced ice capabilities and state-of-the-art scientific research systems, enhancing marine surveys and research on ocean currents and seabeds in Atlantic Canada.
Named after a respected elder from Nunavik, CCGS Naalak Nappaaluk will be stationed in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, accommodating up to 34 crew members and 26 scientists. The vessel’s modular working deck, marine mammal observation station, and oceanographic winch make it a versatile platform for collecting data and samples to support sustainable ocean management. Additionally, the ship is capable of search and rescue operations and environmental response efforts when necessary.
The launch of CCGS Naalak Nappaaluk signifies a new era in ocean research and marine conservation efforts in Canada. The vessel’s design and capabilities reflect a commitment to innovation and dedication to understanding the impact of climate change on our oceans. With its advanced features and focus on scientific research, the OOSV will play a crucial role in supporting Canada’s domestic and international commitments to ocean conservation and sustainability.
