The VOC Port at Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu is set to become India’s first green hydrogen hub, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi launching several initiatives on February 28. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced that the port will develop an ecosystem of green ports and emerge as a transshipment hub. Additionally, Chennai will become the gateway to the Eastern Maritime Corridor to Vladivostok, Russia, increasing bilateral trade between the two countries.
During the launch, PM Modi will lay the foundation stone, inaugurate, and dedicate 36 transformative projects worth over Rs 17,000 crore, a step towards Viksit Bharat @2047. About 30 projects under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways will be inaugurated by the prime minister, with six projects worth Rs 7,587 crore in Tamil Nadu ports alone.
The development of the Outer Harbour Container Terminal project at VOC Port will significantly increase container capacity, reduce logistics costs and time, and boost the state economy. The port will also become India’s first green hydrogen hub for large-scale production, with a focus on reducing emissions. In addition, the Chennai-Vladivostok maritime corridor will reduce transportation time and costs between India and Far East Russia, promoting efficiency in cargo transportation.
