The Port of Southampton has been recognized as the Clean Maritime Innovator at the Maritime UK Solent Awards for its efforts in implementing shore power. The awards celebrate maritime innovation and excellence in the Solent region, and nominations were accepted from organizations of all sizes. The event took place at the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, which is home to famous ships such as HMS Warrior and HMS Victory.
Shore power is now available at two Cruise Terminals at the Port of Southampton – Horizon and Mayflower – for any cruise ship equipped with shore-power capabilities. Alastair Welch, ABP Southampton Regional Director, expressed pride in winning the award and emphasized that implementing shore power is a collaborative effort involving multiple organizations. The goal is to support a sustainable and environmentally-focused sector and port.
The Port of Southampton launched its shore power facility for cruise ships in April 2022. This initiative is part of the port’s commitment to reducing emissions and promoting environmental sustainability. In addition, DP World recently agreed to lease a site next to its Southampton container terminal to develop facilities for lorry drivers. These developments demonstrate the port’s dedication to improving its operations and supporting the maritime industry’s transition towards cleaner and greener practices.
