The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways will host ‘Sagarmanthan: The Great Oceans Dialogue’ in Mumbai involving 100 countries to discuss sustainable solutions for a better future on 18-19 Nov. 2024.
The dialogue aims to highlight India’s interests in the maritime agenda, challenging the dominance of the global north. The event will cover topics such as the blue economy, ports, shipping, critical minerals, and training standards. India, despite its strategic location and long coastline, is only the 16th largest maritime country globally. The government is taking steps to strengthen its maritime sector and establish a more prominent position in global maritime governance.
Investments in projects like the Vadhavan container port aim to create job opportunities and boost the economy. The government aims to overcome past neglect of the shipping and port sector, enhancing India’s maritime power and reclaiming its historical influence beyond its shores. The maritime vision document sets ambitious targets for stakeholders to revitalize India’s maritime prowess.
