The US Maritime Administration (MARAD) has chosen three tankers managed by Crowley – Stena Immaculate, Stena Imperative and Stena Perfect – to participate in the Tanker Security Program (TSP) to guarantee fuel stockpile availability for the US Department of Defense. The medium-haul tankers, which are part of a joint venture between Crowley and Stena Bulk USA, will be re-designated as US-registered vessels with US crews, while international commercial operations will continue. However, their participation in the TSB means they could be chartered at short notice in support of US military operations.

Created to maintain an initial fleet of 10 US-flagged product tankers in the international trade sector, the Tanker Security Program provides a $6m annual stipend for each ship entered. Overseas Shipholding Group (OSG) recently announced that three of its medium-haul tankers – Overseas Santorini, Overseas Mykonos and Overseas Sun Coast – had also been selected to be part of the program. Crowley and Stena Bulk have previously collaborated to meet government and military energy needs and, in 2022, Crowley secured the Military Sealift Command charter contract for the Stena Polarisan Ice-class tanker that supplies fuel to the US Department of Defense in the Arctic, Antarctic and Mediterranean regions.
