Moose Boats has been chosen to build a custom submersible for the Boston Fire Department’s Special Operations Dive Team. The M1 model will be 46 feet long and will be powered by twin Cummins QSC 8.3 liter 1,200 horsepower engines. The M1 allows the dive team to operate a dive boat year-round and has wider beam and catamaran hull which gives them more stability in the turbulent waters in and around Boston Harbor. The controls of the Hamilton AVX Express, which can manoeuvre in close quarters, and the catamaran’s shallow draft, which allows the boat to navigate shallow waters, make it an excellent choice for the dive team to tackle New England’s harsh weather.

Boston Fire Captain Doug Felton says, “The Boston Fire Department is excited to convert our current dive team boat to a Moose Boats, M1. The enclosed cabin will increase our on-site effectiveness by reducing elemental fatigue during long-term diving missions.” The boat has bespoke scuba bottle holders on the aft deck which improve ergonomics and ensure deck space remains free while cruising. This boat will be a major evolution of the team’s current 30-foot submersible launched in 2010 that performs beyond its operational capability.
