The UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MOEI UAE) organized the Maritime Government Leaders Roundtable under the theme “The Roadmap to Unlocking Sustainable Maritime Opportunities” to mark the commencement of the UAE Maritime Week 2023. Industry leaders, policymakers, and experts from governmental and private sector organizations highlighted the critical issues facing the sector and underscored the need for public-private partnerships, innovation, and industry-wide collaborations to ensure sustainable growth and development of the sector. The roundtable, moderated by Fazel A. Fazelbhoy, CEO, Synergy Offshore FZ LLE, and Chris Hayman, Chairman, Seatrade, provided an opportunity to analyze possible areas of expansion for the industry and chart the way forward for the sector in the UAE before COP28 later this year.

HE Eng. Hessa Al Malek, Advisor to the Minister of Maritime Affairs, MOEI UAE, discussed the UAE’s proactive approach in creating an environment conducive to innovation and collaboration, which has strengthened its position as a major player in the global maritime world. Anders Østergaard, Secretary General of the Emirates Shipping Association, praised the UAE’s maritime sector’s capabilities worldwide, which would not have been possible without detailed discussions and careful planning of strategies and initiatives to ensure success. The roundtable facilitated discussions on decarbonization, digitalization, talent development, maritime security, and sectoral growth drivers and identified areas where stakeholders can work together to tackle industry challenges, setting the tone for the rest of the week and events under its umbrella, including Seatrade Maritime Logistics Middle East 2023.

The roundtable highlighted the strategic importance of the maritime industry in the UAE and the Middle East. The country’s investment in world-class port facilities, logistics infrastructure, and talent nurturing programs has paid off, solidifying its position as a leader on the global maritime spectrum. The roundtable’s exchanged perspectives were enlightening and reassuring for the future of shipping.
