PIRIOU Shipyard has delivered TransOceanic Wind Transport’s (TOWT) first sailing cargo ship, which is set to sail to Le Havre today and will dock there on Tuesday. Loading operations will follow before the vessel embarks on its maiden voyage to New York City by the end of next week, with an expected arrival around the 20th.
TOWT’s pioneering efforts in decarbonizing the global maritime sector are highlighted by the delivery of this state-of-the-art vessel. Managing Director Diana MESA expressed emotions over the ship becoming a reality after years of work, emphasizing the partnership with those who have supported the venture. CEO Guillaume Le Grand emphasized the mission to decarbonize world shipping, acknowledging the significance of this milestone in the fight against global warming.
The world’s largest sailing cargo ship, “Anemos,” boasts unique features such as advanced sailing technology, wake energy recovery technology, and impressive dimensions. PIRIOU’s President Vincent Faujour commended the partnership with TOWT and the innovative French contributions to ANEMOS. The vessel marks the beginning of a decarbonized fleet, with plans for seven more sister ships. The ecological impact of sailing as a primary mode of propulsion is emphasized, showcasing significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants compared to traditional container ships.
