A seafarer has died and another has been seriously injured in an accident at the port of Salerno in Italy. The incident occurred when a port truck hit Second Officer Antonino Donato, 29, from the ropax Cartour Delta. The unnamed chief officer is currently in critical condition in a hospital in Salerno. The accident was caused by a malfunction of the “fifth wheel” coupling, which caused a trailer to come loose while a vehicle was reversing during commercial operations. Officials from the port authority attended the scene.

Shipowner Caronte & Tourist expressed their condolences and described the incident as an “enormous tragedy.” The vessel has since left Salerno and headed to Messina. Donato, who lived in Sperone, was well-liked and appreciated by all. The shipowner has insurance coverage from Gard in Norway and operates a fleet of 12 ships, providing ferry services from the mainland to Sicily. Additionally, they have a ropax on order in Turkey for delivery in 2024.
