French authorities confirmed that eight people have tragically died while attempting to cross the English Channel from France to England. This incident follows the deaths of 12 individuals earlier this month when their boat capsized in the Channel. The pressure is mounting on both the British and French governments to address the issue of dangerous boat crossings.
According to Jacques Billant, the prefect of the Pas-de-Calais region, a boat carrying 59 people encountered difficulties off the coast of Ambleteuse. Unfortunately, eight individuals lost their lives in the latest tragedy, while the remaining 51 were rescued and are receiving medical attention. The deceased individuals hailed from countries such as Eritrea, Sudan, Syria, Egypt, Iran, and Afghanistan.
The English Channel is notorious for its strong currents, making small boat crossings perilous. The death toll of individuals attempting to cross the Channel from France this year has now reached 46. On September 14 alone, there were eight attempted crossings, leading to the rescue of around 200 migrants. Authorities continue to focus on enhancing security measures to prevent further tragedies in the future.
