Turkey’s General Directorate of Coastal Safety swiftly responded to a fire on a small coastal RoRo vessel off the Black Sea coast. The vessel, named Ariburnu and built in 1944, was transporting vehicles and equipment from Istanbul to Zonguldak. Although there were no injuries reported, efforts are ongoing to cool the elderly vessel, which is currently adrift off the coast of Sile.
Upon receiving reports of the fire, the Directorate dispatched a tugboat and fast rescue ship to the scene. Images show the deckhouse of the 203-foot vessel engulfed in flames, with smoke billowing from the ship. The exact number of individuals on board the 432 gross ton vessel remains unclear. Firefighting efforts continued throughout the night, with the fire now extinguished, but cooling operations are still in progress.
The Directorate’s prompt response and ongoing efforts have prevented any casualties so far. The vessel’s age and the challenging conditions of the fire make the situation delicate. Despite the extinguished fire, cooling operations are crucial to ensure the safety and stability of the vessel. The Directorate continues to monitor the situation closely to prevent any further incidents.
